After a morning rush, I was finally on my way to BHSS. Filled with excitement and a feeling of nostalgia, I looked through my seat window at unchanged buildings and HDB flats over two years after I've left BHSS. Many memories from regular bus rides with my schoolmates, who live in the East, rushed to my mind leaving me feeling so nostalgic. Thirty minutes passed by with me trying to grab some nap during last 10-minute highway.
Once I stepped out of the bus, a sense of familiarity suddenly struck me. I felt like I was brought back in time. I walked by the coffee shop where I used to have chicken rice seldom. Trudging up the hill under an unforgiving sun was torturing. It used to look quite barren but now it has shelter all the way to the entrance of my old school. I used to hate climbing up the long hill, especially when running to school before flag-raising started. Even now, I still hate dragging my feet up.
Once I reached the school canteen, I was down with beads of sweat. There, I saw familiar faces of my former schoolmates happily enjoying their meals. They were sitting at the exact same table as I and my former batch of schoolmates used to. I smiled as I remembered it. I waved "Hello" to them delightedly.
Since Vanny and her classmates were in the library, I went up to find them. I then spotted lockers being put outside the library to keep the students' bags. Before I entered the library, I was astonished at how much it had revamped as I peeked through a transparent door. There was even a lovely swing. It looked more spacious. As I went in, I saw modern laptops instead of big, fat computers. "Wow!" was the only word I could mouth with my lips.
Just as I walked in, I spotted Vanny in a minute. (: She put on her usual smile when she saw me. Yong Chong said HELLO! Sze Wen was busy FB-ing away. -.- Talking followed with Yong Chong asking how I was and my school life. I then turned my attention to Vanny asking her where Colleen was.
Upon hearing from Vanny that she was still in the train, I asked her to come faster as she was super late. Vanny and I sent her a long bubble filled with crazy emoticons selected by us using her iPhone. We ended up with an uproarious laughter. :D
As the bell started ringing indicating that recess time was up, I headed back to the canteen to meet Colleen.
On my way back, I unexpectedly met Mr Lim near the staircase. Shocked but so happy that I wanted to hug them. Unfortunately, shyness took over. Mr Lim sent me a big hand wave as usual. He asked me how I was coping in my school and I smiled, assuring him that I was doing better with the help of an interpreter. He asked if I felt as if I was initially suffocating and struggling but was finally released by the help of my interpreter. I laughed and nodded at his gestures.
Out of the sudden, Ms Teo just appeared on my right side. She looked sooo happy to see me that she was smiling from cheek to cheek, something I rarely saw her wearing it on her face. Mr Lim then left, allowing me to have a chat with her.
She posed a lot of questions with me giving her answers such as updating her on how I fared in school and having my interpreter has helped me in coping better.
Looking back, I was in awe of Ms Teo and her continuous interest in Social Studies and History. She could remember many facts which we, students used to have problems with. She was pretty rigid on the language during our practices with her and she used to stress on the importance of understanding the facts right, providing vivid explanations, and to write as many facts as we could remember instead of just penning down points without even emphasizing.
Finally, I descended down the stairs to the canteen and met Colleen. We began eating our lunch, topped with reminiscence about our old times, talking about funny and silly things we did. Then, Colleen asked me for help on correcting her grammar, something I had always done for her in secondary school.
I remember myself approaching one of the canteen stalls on our first visit to BHSS last Friday of this year. To my sheer surprise, a stall seller recognised me and took a plate of Hor Fun out of a shelf. Then, she showed it to me checking if it was what I was looking for. Smiling, I nodded in response and passed her the cash.
I joined Colleen at the table and started digging in. Its taste remained unchanged. What a pity I didn't get to eat fried rice as my favourite stall has closed down.
We took a tour of the school soon after our lunch. As we basked in the memories of our school lives, I took photos of the school locations I treasure such as Mother Tongue room. I wish I could enter the room for the last time but it was locked. T.T I bet it remains intact, right?
We decided to go to the library to pass time as we waited for Vanny to finish her school.
In the blink of an eye, fifteen minutes had passed and the bell had rung. Out of the blue, Vanny and Yong Chong appeared in our sights. They finished school five minutes early! We returned to the canteen in unison.
When we could be able to see the canteen from a distance, Vanny signed, "Mr Lim there!!". Upon hearing it, I literally ran towards him, waving wholeheartedly as if I hadn't seen him for eons despite bumping into him about two hours ago.
I was then greeted with his hand waves too. We girls surrounded him around the table he was eating at. I recalled him telling us about the importance of keeping one's brain active as one ages as Colleen asked him to better retire due to his old age. He was now helping students with special needs apart from the hearing impaired (HI) ones because the number of HIs has decreased drastically. He might retire in 2020 if I remembered right.
He also stressed on how critical it is to have a small circle of good friends to have support on and shoulders to cry on. I clearly understood Vanny's pain, sufferings and struggles during her critical period - N Level. I have gone through those terrible times before. I saw her tears and her undying desire to pass her exams well. Vanny, Colleen, me and your teachers will be there to help you as much as we could. Press on, babe!
In between our conversation, Mdm Nafisah, my favourite Science resource teacher, appeared out of the blue. Stunned but so happy that I said "Hi!" to her first after longing to see her. She asked me typical questions like how I'm doing in school with the help of my interpreter. But what a pity she got to leave for her cabin duty soon so our conversation was cut short. Nonetheless, I got to see her for the last time. I may not visit BHSS again.
When I turned my eyes to the clock, I felt as if I had chatted with him for hours when it was only thirty minutes. We laughed and chatted together like old times. Again, I learnt another valuable lessons from Mr Lim. It was something I cherished and missed the most.
BHSS, thanks so much for making four years of my secondary life so memorable that I couldn't be able to forget them after I've left school. THANK YOU once again!
